Adding Character Without a Full Renovation: Maia’s New Build Transformation

Maia came to us looking to do something many homeowners with new builds struggle with—she wanted to add character, warmth, and personality to a space that already had a great foundation. Her home featured brand new walls, fresh paint, and a clean open-concept layout, but like many new constructions, it still felt unfinished and lacking depth.
This project was never about a full gut renovation. Instead, it was about enhancing what was already there and layering in intentional design elements that would completely transform how the space felt.

Creating a Focal Point in the Living Room
The open-concept living room needed definition, so we designed and installed a custom electric fireplace built-in to anchor the space. We wrapped the entire feature in shiplap to introduce texture and visual interest, while Maia sourced a beautiful antique mantel that added instant charm and character.
With the TV mounted above, the entire wall became a true focal point—bringing both function and warmth into the room. The addition of the fireplace gave the large space the dimension it was missing and made it feel more grounded and inviting.
Layering in Architectural Detail
To carry that sense of character throughout the main living space, we added board and batten across the living room and foyer. This detail helped break up the large walls and added a custom, elevated feel to what was once a flat, builder-grade space.
Everything was painted in a soft off-white, allowing the trim work to stand out while still keeping the overall look timeless and cohesive.
An Artistic Moment in the Study
In the study, we introduced a completely different layer of personality with a wallpaper mural. Installed on a single accent wall, the mural is made up of six panels that come together seamlessly, creating a bold and artistic statement.
Full of color and movement, this feature brought energy into the space while still feeling intentional and curated—a perfect contrast to the more neutral tones in the main living area.
Small Details, Big Impact
Even the smaller spaces were given thoughtful attention. In the powder bathroom, we added beadboard to bring in texture and charm. Though subtle, this detail made the space feel more finished and aligned with the overall design direction of the home.

A Dining Room Full of Personality
The dining room was the perfect opportunity to introduce a bold design moment. We wrapped the space in a timeless, elegant wallpaper that added depth and personality without overwhelming the room.
To balance the pattern, we incorporated an accent wall of board and batten, painted in the same off-white used throughout the home. This combination created contrast while maintaining cohesion from space to space.
Bringing It All Together
Maia’s home is a perfect example of how impactful design doesn’t always require starting from scratch. By adding custom millwork, texture, and carefully selected finishes, we were able to transform a new build into a home filled with warmth, dimension, and personality.
At Kendall Sharpe Designs, we believe the most meaningful transformations come from reimagining what’s already there. This project proves that sometimes, it’s not about a full renovation—it’s about adding the right layers to make a house truly feel like home.
